The "7" series cars have long been the top of the BMW line, comparable to the Mercedes "S" class cars. For ride comfort and handling, these 735i's came with an automatic leveling hydraulic suspension (load dependent absorption) that used a pump attached to the power steering pump to automatically raise and lower the rear of the car to keep it level. As the car is loaded, the rear end lowers, causing a control valve to turn, allowing more oil into the rear struts. This added oil pressure keeps the BMW struts extended and the car level, up to the point where maximum pressure is reached and a regulating valve avoids any additional pressure and the rear starts to sag. As the load is removed, the same control valve turns the other way, allowing oil pressure out so that the struts do not overextend and the car stays level.

These BMW struts do a marvelous job of supporting your car. However, with age, your BMW suspension develops leaks and stops working. Suddenly, your 15-20 year old BMW 735i goes from being a joy to drive to being unsafe as the BMW struts fail. Soon you discover that the cost to replace the BMW suspension parts is as much or more than the book value of your car.
